Arlo Security System announced, Arlo Ultra 4K security camera ships later in January

Just a few days ago, Arlo, the makers of the popular wire-free smart security cameras, became a standalone company, as it completed its spin-off from its former parent Netgear. Now at CES 2019, Arlo is showing off some new and upcoming products, including a new suite of devices under the Arlo Security System family.

The Arlo Security System, when it launches in the second half of 2019, will include the Arlo Multi-Sensor, a compact device that can be put nearly anywhere in the home. It can sense a number of different events, such as doors or windows opening, water leaks, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, and motion inside the house. It can also be set up to trigger other Arlo devices, including its security cameras.

When links to the Arlo Smart Hub, the Arlo Siren will emit a very loud alarm sound and generate a red strobe light that should warn off any possible intruders. It can also be set up to create other sounds, such as a dog barking or a TV audio sound, to make an empty house sound like people are there.

Finally, the Arlo Remote lets users arm or disarm the security system without needing a smartphone app. Pricing for these products was not announced.

In addition, the new Arlo Ultra security camera will go on sale later in January, with prices starting at $399.99 for a one-camera system. The Arlo Ultra supports recording of security footage in 4K HDR video quality. It also has features like color night vision, a 180-degree field-of-view, an integrated spotlight, and two-way audio. The wireless design allows the Arlo Ultra to be mounted nearly anywhere. It also includes a magnetic mount, so it can be placed on walls, ceilings, and other hard-to-reach places.

Arlo also announced that the Arlo Ultra And Arlo Pro 2 cameras will add support for Apple’s HomeKit sometime in 2019. Finally, the company announced its new “Works with Arlo” program. Launching in the second half of 2019, it will allow third-party companies to link their smart home devices to Arlo products through the Arlo SmartHub.

First ever drone-delivered kidney is no worse for wear

Drone delivery really only seems practical for two things: take-out and organ transplants. Both are relatively light and also extremely time sensitive. Well, experiments in flying a kidney around Baltimore in a refrigerated box have yielded positive results — which also seems promising for getting your pad thai to you in good kit. The test flights were conducted by researchers at the University of Maryland there, led by surgeon Joseph Scalea. He has been frustrated in the past with the inflexibility of air delivery systems, and felt that drones represent an obvious solution to the last-mile problem. Scalea and his colleagues modified a DJI M600 drone to carry a refrigerated box payload, and also designed a wireless biosensor for monitoring the organ while in flight. After months of waiting, their study was assigned a kidney that was healthy enough for testing but not good enough for transplant. Once it landed in Baltimore, the team loaded it into the container and had it travel 14 ...
