Scientists successfully produce worlds first pair of artificially produced lion cubs

Science is paving the way for bringing lions back from the list of endangered species of animals. Two lion cubs, Victor and Isabel, have been born by the means of artificial insemination and scientists at the University of Pretoria, who are researching the reproductive system of female African lions, say that they are the first such pair of lion cubs in the world. Andre Ganswindt, the Director of University of Pretoria's mammal research institute, says that the two cubs, a male and a female, were born on August 25 and are healthy and normal. He further informs that they had collected sperm from a perfectly healthy lion and his team has pulled off the scientific feat after 18 months of intensive trails, reports AFP.  The female lion that gave birth to the two cubs was artificially inseminated after her hormone levels were found to be viable. "And luckily it was successful," said Ganswindt, adding that "there were several attempts, but surprisingly it didn't take

Huawei Mate 10 Pro reportedly receiving Android Pie in Europe

Huawei is reportedly rolling out the Android Pie-based EMUI 9.0 update to the Mate 10 Pro. The new Huawei update is apparently restricted to European users for now. Prominent EMUI additions include a fingerprint-enabled password manager and GPU Turbo 2.0. Huawei isn’t the fastest when it comes to system updates, but it looks like the company is stepping up with Android Pie . According to GetDroidTips , the Chinese colossus has pushed out a Pie-based update to the Mate 10 Pro . The update is bundled with the EMUI 9.0 Android skin and has the build number 9.0.0.108, the website claims. The OTA is reportedly being pushed out to Mate 10 Pro users in Europe, but will “soon” spread to other markets. EMUI 9.0 packs plenty of features , such as the Google Lens-inspired HiVision feature, GPU Turbo 2.0 for better performance in selected games, and a biometric-enabled password manager (seen below). The Chinese brand is also touting faster app launch speeds and smoother system performa

Nokia 5.1 Plus goes on sale for the first time in India: Price, offers and more

The device is now going on sale in the country for the first time. It comes as a successor to the Nokia 5.1 that too made a debut in India few months ago. Like the Nokia 6.1 Plus, this too has a notch on top of the screen and shares some of the specifications but is a less powerful device nonetheless. from Gadgets Now https://ift.tt/2Is0BXb via app promotion

Microsoft integrates Robot Operating System into Windows 10

Humans have always had a fascination with robots. From being a mainstay in science fiction to aiding smooth operations of large warehouses, robots have been becoming a mainstream entity over the last few years. Given the sudden boom in robotics development, a common open-source Robot Operating System was created by Willow Garage and Stanford’s Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. ROS acts as middleware and provides low-level device control and other services. Users of Microsoft Windows have had to rely on an experimental build for now, one maintained by the community, but Microsoft has now announced that they will support ROS natively on Windows. Core ROS was ported to Windows in September thanks to the community’s efforts, but with Microsoft’s announcement, companies deep into robotics can expect Windows to natively support ROS. However, the feature is still very much experimental and hopefully, Microsoft will continue to improve it and make it final sooner than later. “People have al

Microsoft Surface Laptop 2 and Surface Pro 6 may skip USB-C, leaks suggest

If newly leaked information is to be believed, then the Microsoft Surface Laptop 2 and the Surface Pro 6 will not be blessed with USB Type-C ports. Until now, we were under the impression the new Microsoft Surface devices would feature the port that’s steadily growing in popularity and prevalence, but leaked images from MySmartPrice show a Surface Laptop 2 in a new black colour but with no USB Type-C ports. In the same way, a report from WinFuture explains that “the hardware of the new Surface Pro 6 and Surface Laptop 2 remains completely identical externally.” The German site WinFuture also says that the base variant of the new Surface Laptop 2 will feature an Intel Core i5 CPU, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of SSD-based storage. This is definitely a bump over the previous model, which offered only 4GB of RAM on the base variant. While there’s a spec upgrade on the Surface Laptop, WinFuture claims the base variant of the new Surface Pro 6 will still ship with an Intel Core m3-7y30 CPU and 4G

OnePlus 3, OnePlus 3T OxygenOS 506 update with September Android security patch, bug fixes now rolling out

OnePlus is updating its OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T phones with the latest OxgenOS 5.0.6 Over The Air update. The new patch brings the September Android security patch for the two smartphones, along with some general bug fixes and improvements. However, that is all there is to the update as there are no new features or additions to the operating system. As mentioned, the new patch is being seeded as an OTA update and can take some time to reach every device. One can check if it’s available on their unit by heading over to Software Updates in Settings.  As per OnePlus’ Software Maintenance Schedule, which was announced back in June, the OnePlus 3/3T will receive regular OTA updates till November 2018. The company will be seeding new features, Android version updates and Security patches once in two months for two years since a phone was launched. This will be followed by bi-monthly Android security patch updates for another year. This means that the OnePlus 3/3T should be up-to-date in te

OnePlus 6T rumour and teaser roundup: Everything we know about the upcoming Flagship Killer so far

Another day, another OnePlus 6T teaser. OnePlus, on its official social handles, has released a small 5 second video teasing the edge of the smartphone. One glimpse of the teaser, and it looks like the smartphone will have an edge-to-edge display with slim bezels. Information circulating the internet suggests that the OnePlus 6T will be announced on October 17. The date seems to be a little early as historically OnePlus has launched its “T” devices in November. Additionally, an image of the launch invite also features the new tagline “Unlock The Speed,” which is most likely a reference to the presence of an in-display fingerprint sensor on the upcoming phone. Vivo was the first company that launched a smartphone with an in-display fingerprint sensor. The OnePlus 6T is rumoured to feature a ‘waterdrop’ notch display, same as the Oppo R17 Pro or the Vivo V11 Pro. In terms of display size, it is rumoured to sport a 6.4-inch AMOLED screen with a 2340x1080p resolution. As mentioned above,

Best Buy accidentally sells 3rd generation Google Chromecast to customer before launch

Google’s Chromecast has been a vastly popular device, with just enough features to keep the users happy, and enough missing for everyone to look forward to the next generation of the device. The Google Chromecast is up for an upgrade and turns out, even before Google had a chance to reveal the new entertainment dongle, Best Buy has already sold a unit to a lucky customer. The news comes directly from the customer himself, who took to Reddit to discuss his experience. In a post titled “I think I bought the 3rd gen Chromecast too early,” the OP (original poster) writes “I went to Best Buy earlier to pick up a Chromecast for my new TV, then I noticed the packaging and design was different from my first one. I thought it was just a design refresh taking queues from the Chromecast Ultra. Then when I was at the cashier, they couldn't scan the item because it wasn't in the system yet because the release date is on the 9th of October (Same day as the 2018 Google event) but I guess the

Samsung targets 'Appel' by pulling a marketing stunt

Ever since the new iPhones have launched, Android OEMs have been making fun of them. We saw Xiaomi launching offer bundles using the ‘XS’, ‘XS Max’ and ‘XR’ monikers, followed by Huawei tweeting and thanking Apple for keeping things the ‘same’. The Chinese firm also distributed free power banks to those standing in the queue to buy the new iPhones. Now, Samsung too has joined the bandwagon by posting a small video wherein some Samsung executives visit a place called ‘Appel’ and distribute their smartphones. from Gadgets Now https://ift.tt/2Itixkc via app promotion

California governor signs nation’s toughest net neutrality bill into law

California Gov. Jerry Brown has signed the nation’s toughest net neutrality bill into law. The law will prohibit internet providers from blocking or throttling any legal apps and websites, and it will ban paid prioritization of content. The law also goes further than the since-overturned federal net neutrality rules by banning zero-rating — offering free data — of specific apps. Several other states have taken action on net neutrality, but most chose to enact protections in a looser fashion that didn’t enforce it on all providers and wiggled around the Federal Communication Commission’s prohibition on state net neutrality laws. California, on the other hand, chose to just go for it, and it’s enacted a law that very clearly replicates and... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2QjoHpw

Conference app for the UK’s Conservative Party leaked attendee data

This weekend, members of the UK’s Conservative Party kicked off their annual conference in Birmingham, using the event to highlight their plans and priorities for the coming year. This year’s event had a rocky start: its official app allowed users to access personal contact information of other attendees, without a password. According to the BBC , the app had a button that allowed users to press a button and enter an attendee’s e-mail address, which gave them access without prompting them for a password. Several attendees reported that they were not only able to access non-public information in the accounts of various party members such as phone numbers and e-mail addresses , but they could also change said information . The FBI used a suspect’s face to unlock his iPhone in Ohio case

When Apple debuted Face ID with the iPhone X last year, it raised an interesting legal question: can you be compelled to unlock your phone by looking at it? In an apparent first, Forbes reports that the FBI got a suspect to unlock his phone during a raid in August. In August, the FBI raided the home of Grant Michalski, looking for evidence that he had sent or received child pornography. They were armed with a search warrant [ warning: this documentation contains explicit descriptions of sexual abuse ] which allowed them to search Michalski’s computer for evidence, and during the raid, agents recovered his iPhone X. The agents who found the iPhone asked Michalski to unlock the device via Face ID, which he did. They “placed the [phone] into... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2zH94TI

Dad Adam Driver learns how to play Fortnite on SNL

Saturday Night Live returned for its 44th season this weekend, with The Last Jedi ’s Adam Driver returning as host. While he didn’t reprise his role of Matt the Radar Technician from his 2016 appearance, he did jump on another cultural bandwagon: Fortnite . The sketch opens with Dad Driver joining a squad, explaining that his ex-wife’s new husband has been playing the game with his son, and that he wants to find a way to keep up. It doesn’t go well. Driver’s naïve character is truly out of his element, which makes for a fun skit in and of itself — running into walls and messing up the entire mission, but what really makes the sketch is the fact that SNL decided to forgo using game footage for the sketch. Instead, they reenacts the... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2QfLuTg

Almost everyone watches YouTube — if not regularly, at least occasionally. The service is a functional monopoly when it comes to online video. It's also ad-supported, and while those advertisements aren't anywhere near as annoying or ridiculous as contemporary television, they are a noticeable part of using YouTube. Leak reveals Microsoft’s Surface Laptop 2 and Surface Pro 6 might lack USB-C ports

Microsoft is holding a Surface hardware event on Tuesday (October 2nd) in New York City, and a new leak reveals the company will announce a Surface Laptop 2 and Surface Pro 6. We’d been expecting Microsoft to refresh both these devices at the event, but we’d also been assuming the new hardware would come with modern USB-C ports. Germany site WinFuture claims that neither the Surface Laptop 2 or Surface Pro 6 will include USB-C ports. Instead, Microsoft is said to be sticking with its trusted mini DisplayPort and Surface Connector combo for connecting to displays and charging the device. The Gardens Between is an unexpected lesson in theoretical physics

It can be difficult to find time to finish a video game, especially if you only have a few hours a week to play. In our biweekly column Short Play we suggest video games that can be started and finished in a weekend. The Gardens Between is about two kids, Ariana and Frendt, exploring surreal islands that are made from objects in their shared memories. But you don’t actually control either character directly — you control the flow of time. At first this seems like a difficult thing to wrap your head around. But because of how you are able to observe the forward and backward movement of time, it all makes sense, as you’re able to understand the causality of events. However, when I think about how the characters might see these events... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2QndpAX
