Huawei: ‘The US security accusation of our 5G has no evidence. Nothing.’

Huawei’s rotating chairman Guo Ping kicked off a keynote speech this morning at the world’s biggest mobile industry tradeshow with a wry joke. “There has never been more interest in Huawei,” he told delegates at Mobile World Congress. “We must be doing something right!” The Chinese company is seeking to dispel suspicion around the security of its 5G network equipment which has been accelerated by U.S. president Trump who has been urging U.S. allies not to buy kit or services from Huawei. (And some, including Australia , have banned carriers from using Huawei kit.) Last week Trump also tweet-shamed U.S. companies — saying they needed to step up their efforts to rollout 5G networks or “get left behind”. In an MWC keynote speech yesterday the European Commission’s digital commissioner Mariya Gabriel   signalled the executive is prepared to step in and regulate to ensure a “common approach” on the issue of network security — to avoid the risk of EU member states taking individual...

Xiaomi launches Redmi Note 7 in India but the Redmi Note 7 Pro steals its thunder

In a press conference in New Delhi, Xiaomi launched the Redmi Note 7 in India – just a couple of months after it launched the Redmi Note 6 Pro in the market. Xiaomi has been the number one smartphone brand in India, the company’s biggest market outside of China, since over a year now and much of its success and positive mindshare has been piggybacking on its bestselling Note series. The Redmi Note 7 is Xiaomi’s first smartphone under its new Redmi sub-brand. Not the 48MP camera While the Redmi Note 7 Pro sports the much-hyped 48MP rear camera, the Redmi Note 7 pro comes with a 12MP camera combined with a 2MP depth sensor. On the front, there’s a 13MP camera for your selfies. Of course, there are the AI smarts like the scene detection, AI Portrait 2.0, et al. A new design, finally Xiaomi has finally decided to refresh its design language with the Redmi Note 7 going with the now common glass sandwich design. It does sport some eye-catching gradient colors making the smartphone ...

Today’s floods in California may be a preview of a more extreme future

A storm in northern California dumped so much water on the region that roads turned into moats, isolating two California towns . It’s the kind of storm that experts project might become more extreme as climate change continues — which could mean a future of even worse flooding for California. Over the past few days, parts of northern California have been drenched with record levels of rain. North of San Francisco, the Russian River rolled over its banks to surround the Sonoma County towns of Guerneville and Monte Rio , The Press Democrat reports . Yesterday , thousands of people were told to evacuate. By today, it was too late for some: “Guerneville is officially an island,” the Sonoma County sheriff announced on Facebook . “You will not be... Fortnite dance lawsuits are bad for copyright and bad for culture

Fortnite is one of the most popular and profitable video games in history, and its publisher Epic is copying creative work from children and independent artists without paying them. So it’s not surprising that seven people have sued the company, claiming Epic broke copyright law by turning their dance moves into Fortnite emotes. These suits are exploring interesting new legal territory. But if they succeed, it could be bad for dance, bad for copyright, and bad for the culture these lawsuits are ostensibly trying to protect. For anybody who’s not familiar with Fortnite , emotes are short avatar animations that players can buy or earn. Like other cosmetic in-game items, they’re often fun because they’re familiar. You can get generic... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2TiKKSI

‘Thunderclap’ vulnerability could leave Thunderbolt computers open to attacks

A team of researchers has revealed a new security vulnerability in the Thunderbolt data transfer specification called “ Thunderclap ” that could leave computers open to serious attacks from otherwise innocuous USB-C or DisplayPort hardware. As researcher Theo Markettos explains , Thunderclap takes advantage of the privileged, direct-memory access (DMA) that Thunderbolt accessories are granted to gain access to the target device. Unless proper protections are put in place, hackers can use that access to steal data, track files, and run malicious code. It’s the sort of OS-level access that accessories like GPUs or network cards are typically granted. Because Thunderbolt is designed to replicate those functions externally, it requires the... USB 3.2 standard gets new, even more confusing names ahead of its mainstream debut

First, the good news: USB 3.2, the upcoming specification that the USB Implementers Forum announced back in 2017 , is finally coming out this year. The bad news is that the group has also brought with it a slate of new names not only for the new standard , but also for the old versions of USB 3.0, too. Here’s how it all breaks down: USB 3.2 Gen 1: originally known as USB 3.0, and previously renamed to USB 3.1 Gen 1. It’s the original USB 3.0 specification, and it can transfer data at up to 5Gbps. USB 3.2 Gen 2: Previously known as USB 3.1, and then later as USB 3.1 Gen 2. It offers speeds at up to 10Gbps. USB 3.2 Gen 2x2: formally known as USB 3.2, it’s the newest and fastest spec, promising speeds at up to 20Gbps (by using two lanes of... Moderating content doesn’t have to be so traumatic

Lasting trauma doesn’t necessarily have to be in the job description for workers who watch graphic or violent videos as part of their jobs. Content moderators, journalists, and activists often have to wade through horrific images, videos and text to do their work, a task that can imperil their mental health and lead to post-traumatic stress disorder. Luckily, experts say there are ways to minimize the harms of so-called vicarious or secondary trauma. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is caused by experiencing or witnessing a terrifying incident, and the symptoms include acute anxiety, flashbacks, and intrusive thoughts. Though most people think about PTSD in the context of war or being physically involved with a crisis, in recent... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2Nwieri

Motorola confirms its foldable phone is coming, and it could look like a RAZR

Following reports that Motorola would, too, get into the folding smartphone scene , the company today confirmed in an interview with Engadget that it is working on a folding device that would launch “[no] later than everybody else in the market.” That puts Motorola’s timeline at sometime this year at the latest, with Samsung due to launch its Galaxy Fold in April and Huawei’s Mate X in mid-2019. Motorola usually holds an annual smartphone launch event around August. That time last year, it announced its 5G-ready Moto Z3 with the 5G Moto Mod , so we’ll likely get a glimpse at Motorola’s take on foldable screens this summer. The Engadget interview also confirms that the design would not feature a full-sized screen on the outside of the... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2IC6hRV

OneWeb’s first six global internet satellites are safely in orbit

Update : Launch and deployment successful! After four years and more than $2 billion in funding, OneWeb is ready to launch the first six satellites out of a planned constellation of 650 with which it plans to blanket the world in broadband. The Arianespace-operated Soyuz rocket will take off at 1:37 Pacific time from Guiana Space Center. You can watch it live at OneWeb’s site here . OneWeb is one of several companies that aims to connect the world with a few hundred or thousand satellites, and certainly the most well-funded — SoftBank is the biggest investor, but Virgin Group, Coca-Cola, Bharti Group, Qualcomm and Airbus have all chipped in. The company’s plan is to launch a total of 900 (650 at first) satellites to about a 1,100-kilometer low Earth orbit, from which it says it will be able to provide broadband to practically anywhere on Earth — anywhere you can put a base station, anyway. Much cheaper and better than existing satellite connectivity, which is expensive and slow. S...

Pokémon Sword and Shield to land on Nintendo Switch this year

Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have unveiled the next Pokémon game in the main series. The new game will come in two variants later this year — Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield. Nintendo announced the new game in a Pokémon Direct live stream. And if you’ve been playing Pokémon in the past, you’ll feel right at home. The design of the world and the characters look just like Pokémon Let’s Go on the Nintendo Switch, but with more details. There will be a new region called Galar and it vaguely looks like the U.K. In addition to cities, you’ll be walking around mountains, caverns and woods. And, of course, there will be new monsters, new gym leaders, new fights and a blank Pokédex to fill. Seeing this brand new world feels surreal when you think about the Game Boy days. Nintendo is probably going to sell a ton of games to new players and older players who still have fond memories of the early days of the franchise. The new starting roster is made of three different monsters — Grooke...

The Shadow Ghost turns cloud gaming into a seamless experience

French startup Blade, the company behind Shadow , is launching a new set-top box to access its cloud gaming service — the Shadow Ghost. I’ve been playing with the device for a couple of weeks and here’s my review. The Shadow Ghost is a tiny little box that doesn’t do much. The true magic happens in a data center near your home. When you sign up to Shadow, you don’t even have to get a box. You can simply subscribe to the service without any hardware device and use the company’s apps instead. Shadow is a cloud computing service for gamers. For $35 per month, you can access a gaming PC in a data center and interact with this computer. Right now, Shadow gives you eight threads on an Intel Xeon 2620 processor, an Nvidia Quadro P5000 GPU that performs more or less as well as an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080, 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. You can optionally get more storage with an extra subscription. It’s a full Windows 10 instance and you can do whatever you want with it. Most subscribers ...

Samsung Galaxy S10 powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 beats Exynos 9820 in early benchmarks

Highlights Snapdragon variant of Galaxy S10 beats Exynos variant on PCMark 2.0 Exynos 9820 20 percent faster than Exynos 9810 Samsung, for the last few years, has insisted on shipping its flagship smartphone with two different chipsets in individual markets. While countries like the U.S. get the Qualcomm Snapdragon-powered variant, India gets the Samsung Galaxy S10 powered by the company’s own Exynos 9820 processor. AnandTech has run early benchmarks on the Snapdragon and Exynos variants of the S10 and the results are rather interesting. The benchmarks run on the two phones include PCMark 2.0 and Speedometer 2.0. Traditionally, we have seen the Snapdragon-powered Galaxy S smartphones to be faster than their Exynos counterparts, and this report shows nothing different. For the most part, the Snapdragon 855 powered Samsung Galaxy S10 beats the Exynos variant by a large margin in most of PCMark’s testing parameters, including the Web Browsing, Photo Editing and even Writing 2.0 sub-tests...
