Dixons Carphone now says ~8.8M more customers affected by 2017 breach

A Dixons Carphone  data breach that was disclosed earlier this summer  was worse than initially reported. The company is now saying that personal data of 10 million customers could also have been accessed when its systems were hacked. The European electronics and telecoms retailer believes its systems were accessed by unknown and unauthorized person/s in 2017, although it only disclosed the breach in June , after discovering it during a review of its security systems. Last month it said 5.9M payment cards and 1.2M customer records had been accessed. But with its investigation into the breach “nearing completion”, it now says approximately 10M records containing personal data (but no financial information) may have been accessed last year — in addition to the 5.9M compromised payment cards it disclosed last month. “While there is now evidence that some of this data may have left our systems, these records do not contain payment card or bank account details and there is no evidence th

Newly legal 3D-printed gun blueprints targeted by state lawsuits

Hot on the heels of the effective legalization of 3D models used to print firearm components , 21 states have filed a joint lawsuit against the federal government, alleging not only that decision is dangerous but also that it’s illegal for a number of reasons. But the lawsuit may backfire via the so-called Streisand Effect, further entrenching the controversial technology. Earlier this month brought the news that the U.S. government dropped its case against Cody Wilson and his companies dedicated to the proliferation of 3D models of firearm parts. There are still restrictions on how guns can be made and sold, but the files containing 3D data and allowing people to print components seem to have been determined not to fall under those rules. This was unwelcome news for those in favor of stricter gun control laws, a group apparently including the attorneys general of 21 states. Bob Ferguson, AG for Washington, announced that his team would be leading a lawsuit intended to block the fede

OpenAI’s robotic hand doesn’t need humans to teach it human behaviors

Gripping something with your hand is one of the first things you learn to do as an infant, but it’s far from a simple task, and only gets more complex and variable as you grow up. This complexity makes it difficult for machines to teach themselves to do, but researchers at Elon Musk and Sam Altman-backed OpenAI have created a system that not only holds and manipulates objects much like a human does, but developed these behaviors all on its own. Many robots and robotic hands are already proficient at certain grips or movements — a robot in a factory can wield a bolt gun even more dexterously than a person. But the software that lets that robot do that task so well is likely to be hand-written and extremely specific to the application. You couldn’t for example, give it a pencil and ask it to write. Even something on the same production line, like welding, would require a whole new system. OpenAI’s ‘Dota 2’ neural nets are defeating human opponents Yet for a human, picking up an

This is the leaked DJI Mavic 2 drone

Here is the DJI Mavic 2 before you’re supposed to see it. Just like the original, it’s a small, foldable drone with amazing capabilities. This time around, there will be two different versions, the Zoom and the Pro, though both will reportedly have the ability to fly at 45mph with a range of five miles. DJI has yet to announce this model and this is not the first time it’s appeared . This leak comes from the UK where the drones are described in detail in the latest Argos catalog. Both editions of the Mavic 2 will reportedly have 360-degree collision detection and sport DJI’s Advanced Pilot Assistance Systems and Active Track 2.0 to assist in flying the drone. The battery life is clocked at 31 minutes. The DJI Mavic 2 Pro comes equipped with a 1-inch CMOS Hasselblad camera where the Zoom model has a 2x zoom lens. The Argos advertisement doesn’t mention if the gimbals are removable. Pricing and release date are not mentioned in the advertisement. Chances are both models will be avai

WhatsApp group calls are rolling out to everyone, but don’t ditch Skype just yet

WhatsApp Blog WhatsApp group calls are now rolling out to all, following a test run with a small group of users. The feature was first announced at Facebook’s F8 conference in May. Group audio and video calls are limited to four users, so it’s not a Skype replacement just yet. Facebook originally announced group audio and video calls for WhatsApp back at the F8 conference, before opening it to a subset of users . It looks like the feature is now ready for prime-time as the messaging platform has announced availability for all users. According to a post on the WhatsApp Blog , the feature started its rollout yesterday (July 30). Sit tight if you haven’t received the functionality just yet, it should appear soon. Do note that group calls have a four-member limit, so you can’t conduct a large-scale meeting via this route. It’s far from a Slack or Skype call replacement right now, but it could be handy for small groups of family and friends. To get started, initiate a call o

Mars is closest to Earth since 2003 today

Mars will be the closest to Earth in over 15 years today. The Red Planet will be at a distance of 35.8 million miles (57.6 million kilometers) from Earth today, making it visible in the sky till atleast 2:30PM IST today. This will be the closest Mars gets to Earth since 2003 and the next such event will occur in October 2020. By mid-August, Mars will become fainter as Mars and Earth travel farther away from each other in their orbits around the Sun. According to NASA, Mars’ brightness increases as it comes closer to our planet, making it visible in the sky. The minimum distance from the Earth to Mars is about 33.9 million miles (54.6 million kilometers). Factors like gravitational tugging by other planets and the fact that the both Earth and Mars have elliptical (egg-shaped) paths, with their orbits slightly tilted with respect to each other, means that not all close encounters between the two are equal. In 2003, Mars made its closest approach to Earth in nearly 60,000 years! It won&#

Fortnite for Android may not be available via Google Play Store

It looks like its raining news about Fortnight Battle Royale for Android. The most recent bit of news comes once again from XDA Developers who report that the game may not be available for download via the Google Play Store. Instead the developer, Epic Games, may make the game available for download via their own website and then side-load the app. The guys over at XDA Developers dug around the source code of the website and claim to have found instructions of how to download and install the game on their Android smartphones.  Redditor /u/thesbros also claims to have found images which walk the user through the whole process. The first tells users to download and install the game through the browser. The second image lets the user know that they will be prompted with some “security permissions,” which is most likely referring to the enabling of app installation from unknown sources. Unlike iOS, Android allows users to install apps from third-party sources. Of course, the question stil

Samsung says the Galaxy S9 isn’t selling very well

Samsung Electronics’ quarterly earnings are in , and as ever they’re right in line with guidance , meaning that the company’s run of record profits is at an end. Samsung made an operating profit of 14.87 trillion won on sales of 58.4 trillion won; revenue was down 4 percent year on year. According to Samsung, the drop in revenue can be put down to “softer sales of smartphones and display panels.” The company’s most important phone of the year, the Galaxy S9 , went on sale at the end of the previous quarter, but Samsung describes its performance as “slow.” Earlier this month analysts predicted that it would be the worst-selling Galaxy S flagship phone since 2012’s Galaxy S3. Google blasts you with Windows and Mac error messages in new Chromebook ad

Google isn’t holding back with its latest Chromebook commercial. The minute-long ad blasts you with Windows and macOS error messages, virus warnings, and blue screens of death all in an effort to demonstrate the simplicity of Chrome OS. Google’s message is that its Chromebooks come with virus protection, automatic updates, all-day battery life, and a variety of Android apps. It’s Google’s first clear shot at both Windows and Mac laptops, and it comes nearly five years after Microsoft launched its own attacks at Chromebooks . Most of Google’s criticisms of Windows and macOS would have made more sense years ago, though, as both Microsoft and Apple have addressed many of the infamous problems Google has chosen to highlight. Windows 10 ships... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2LJJXX9

Firefox is getting a new logo, and Mozilla wants to hear what users think

Mozilla is redesigning the Firefox logo, with a little help from the rest of us. This time around, though, the plan isn’t just to create one new icon for the flagship browser, but to design an entire series of icons to fit the brand’s different ventures — from mobile and VR browsers, to screenshot and file sharing tools. Mozilla’s already uploaded some possible takes , and now wants users to comment on its blog for feedback about what the icons should look like. “As an icon, that fast fox with a flaming tail doesn’t offer enough design tools to represent this entire product family,” Mozilla designers wrote in a blog post. That means looking past recoloring the logo or making the fox sleeker: Mozilla is starting from square one with many... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2mTNfsJ

Google’s latest Chromebook ad highlights the worst of Windows and MacOS

Google has released a new Chromebook ad that throws shade at Windows and macOS. The ad compares Chrome OS to its rivals by showing an increasing number of issues that occur on the other systems. The ad also demonstrates that Chrome OS is much more than just a web browser inside a computer. For many years, Chrome OS has been known as the browser-based operating system that runs on cheap hardware that people buy for their kids. While many still might think Chromebooks are only good for browsing the web, Google really wants to change the narrative. As you can see in Google’s latest ad, the search giant starts off by poking fun at Windows and macOS. The video highlights several notable pain points found in rival operating systems, including error messages, virus threats, software crashes and lag. The advertisement follows up this criticism by showcasing what’s possible on Chromebooks such as running ( Android ) apps, editing photos, writing on the display (where applicable),

YouTube’s dark theme has started gradually rolling out to Android

A dark theme option for YouTube users on Android is in the early stages of rolling out to end users, Google confirmed to TechCrunch, following a number of reports and sightings of the dark mode showing up for users in the app’s settings. The feature has taken a bit longer to launch than expected – YouTube first announced a dark mode for its mobile app back in March, when it launched on iOS. At the time, the company said the dark theme for Android was coming “soon.” Five months later, well, here it is. Similar to its iOS counterpart, the dark theme is toggled on or off in the Android app’s Settings. When enabled, YouTube’s usual white background switches to black throughout the YouTube app experience as your browse, search and watch videos. The dark theme has a variety of benefits for end users. It gives watching videos a more cinematic feel, for starters. And when you’ve been staring at your screen for a long time, it can help you to better focus on the content, and not the

Fabric offers an alternative to Facebook sharing with a private timeline of personal moments

Fabric , a personal journaling app that emerged from Y Combinator’s 2016 batch of startups , is relaunching itself as a Facebook alternative. The app is giving itself a makeover in the wake of Facebook’s closure of the Moves location tracker, by offering its own tool to record your activities, photos, memories and other moments shared with friends and family. But unlike on Facebook, everything in Fabric is private by default and data isn’t shared with marketers. Instead, the startup hopes to build something users will eventually pay for, via premium features or subscriptions. The idea for the startup came from two people who helped create Facebook’s core features. Co-founders Arun Vijayvergiya and Nikolay Valtchanov worked for several years at the social network, where Vijayvergiya built the product that would later become Facebook Timeline at an internal hackathon. He also worked on products like Friendship Pages, Year in Review and On This Day, while Valtchanov developed integ
